Garments

New York City was once one of the only cities in the world where a clothing designer could have a garment made, from beginning to end, in one day. All the fabrics, buttons, zippers, expert seamstresses, and tailors are found in one central location, the New York City Garment District.

Once a mainstay of New York City industry, employing thousands, occupying buildings on the westside from 14th Street to 42nd Street, the garment district now occupies just three blocks in Manhattan.

This series of photographs commissioned by the Garment Industry Development Corporation, is a sample of what remains of this once thriving industry in New York and its surrounding boroughs.
